Screen-Free Activities to Work From Home With Kids
Try this low-prep 90-minute activity rotation for independent play while you work from home. Quiet indoor activities for kids ages 2 to 6, no screens needed.

How to Keep a 2- to 6-Year-Old Quietly Busy Indoors While You Work From Home: A 90-Minute Activity Rotation
You have a meeting in five minutes and your kid just asked you to watch them do the same somersault for the eighth time. You don't need a Pinterest board of 50 crafts. You need a plan you can run on autopilot, today, with stuff you already own.
Here's the gap in most advice out there: it gives you a giant list of ideas but never tells you how to string them together for an actual work block. This is a real-time, age-banded rotation that gets you 90 minutes of quiet, independent play while you're sitting ten feet away on a call.
Why a Rotation Beats a Single Activity
A 2-year-old might focus on one thing for 8 minutes. A 6-year-old might go 25. Nobody goes 90 minutes on one activity, screen or no screen.
The fix is short activity rotations for young children: three or four low-prep stations, each one swapped out before boredom hits. You're not managing one long activity, you're managing transitions, and transitions are easy if you've set them up in advance.
Think of it in 20 to 25 minute blocks:
- Block 1 (20 min): Quiet table task
- Block 2 (20 min): Floor-based independent play
- Block 3 (25 min): Movement-adjacent but contained activity
- Block 4 (25 min): Wildcard or repeat favorite
Set a visual timer (a sand timer or a kitchen timer with a loud tick works great for this age group) so the kid, not you, tracks when it's time to switch.
The 90-Minute Rotation, Block by Block
Block 1: Quiet Table Task (20 minutes)
This is your deepest-focus block, so give it your quietest activity. Good low-prep options:
- Sticker sheets and a blank notebook
- A muffin tin with dried beans, pasta, and a spoon for sorting
- Playdough with a rolling pin and cookie cutters (keep it on a tray to limit mess)
- A coloring page. If you don't have one printed, a free Chunky Crayon page prints in seconds and buys a genuinely quiet stretch, no setup required beyond hitting print.
This works for ages 2 to 6, you just scale the complexity. A 2-year-old sorts beans by color. A 6-year-old makes patterns with them.
Block 2: Floor-Based Independent Play (20 minutes)
Move them off the chair and onto a blanket or rug near your desk. This block is about kids playing independently near a parent, visible but not needing you.
- Building blocks or magnetic tiles with a
